Have a rad Friday.

HEY.

How was your week? We’re just getting back from spending some time in LA and Palm Springs aka the “Land of shorts” (as opposed to the “Land of pants” that is San Francisco). It was a good time and I took a ton of photos that I will share here soon. While we were away, Keeper went to puppy camp and had fun making friends with other dogs (we put Jack in the same camp when he was a little guy). Jack got us all to himself for the last week and took full advantage of the extra snugs. It’s funny how much Keep was missed. Every morning waking up it felt like something was missing. No paws in the face, no shouting “NO Keeper!” into the morning air like a crew of grumpy sailors (a highly effective way to get two grown ass adults out of bed in the morning, btw). Sure it’s more peaceful to wake up without a dog sitting on your chest, licking your face, and starting fights with the cat who is sleeping next to you, but something about her chaos has become oddly comforting. I like my wild dog. I like how I can’t roll the window down too far because she’ll stick her whole body outside of the car. I like that if I don’t know where she is, I know 9 times out of 10 she’s probably in the kitchen licking the grease off the cast iron pan on the bottom shelf. I like how she begs for ice cubes whenever I go to the fridge for a glass of water and how she runs everywhere like the world’s largest predator is chasing her. And yes that was an entire paragraph devoted to the love of my dog.

So, what are you guys up to this weekend? I’m not sure what we’re going to do yet. Maybe decompress for a bit? That doesn’t sound like us. I just joined a pool so I’m excited to start swimming again. Swimming is my kind of exercise. Any swimmers out there? Nah? I get it. Swimming is like the Old Navy of sports, it just ain’t that cool. Anyway, here are a few fun links from around the web lately. Hope you have a good weekend.

The other evening we decided to step away from the projects we were working on and spend a few hours to ourselves. It was really refreshing to hit the reset button on life with my favorite person.  We went to a cool spot in Oakland’s Piedmont district where we rented a private hot tub and sauna. It felt so good to sweat every toxin imaginable out of our bodies, then soak in an outdoor redwood tub while looking up at the sky. It was the perfect way to center ourselves for the week ahead and I can’t wait to return.

It’s been cloudy and cold in the Bay, and I’ve been holed away writing for work so I haven’t been able to get out much lately. I’m dreamin’ of sunny weather and a warm beach day…in the meantime, here are some things around here that are currently making my week. Continue reading…

“You know what they should do to educate kids these days? Put them in the woods. Just let them figure it out. Everything is so complicated for kids today. But hey, what do I know, I’m just a child of the sixties” -older woman in line in front of me at Whole Foods. I enjoy these moments a lot living in Berkeley, since it’s basically the land of the leftover hippie movement.

This past weekend started early – on Thursday we went and saw Florence and the Machine at the Masonic Center with some friends and that was really fun.

Saturday we went up to Redwood park in the Oakland Hills and walked around with the dogs. I love the towering redwoods. I love living in a place that has them. I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of that. Keeper and Jack chased each other down the trails, stopping briefly to throw these super smiley looks back our way indicating they were indeed having the times of their lives (it happens often). Keep has really come into her own lately. She’s so sweet and loving and confident in herself. She does this little howl that just makes your heart go all gelatinous. Good little sidekicks.

Then Sunday was lazy, filled with laundry and music. We drove out to Treasure Island, this man-made city island in between San Francisco and the east bay. It was windy and chilly so we just sat in Lola and watched the sun go down over the water.
And here we are, Monday. Here we are. Hope you guys had a good weekend too.

Trey just came in the room to see what I was doing. He has this way about him where he’s this really confident guy and I like that. He notices I’m taking a photo of him and pretends not to care, going about what he’s doing. But if you hold it, if you wait, there’s always a moment when it gets too much for him and he unravels a bit. He becomes aware of the camera and he’ll smile or start laughing like some dramatic actor breaking character. And then he’ll ask me, “Is my hair messed up?” while running his hand through his hair or adjusting his beanie. “No love, you look great“, I’ll reassure him. He’ll go about trying to resume his composure, back to whatever state he was in before, but he’s forgotten what that was and instead he just grins. I have a folder saved on my computer of these moments because they are my favorite. I like seeing that side of him.

This past weekend was pretty chill. We skated the shipyards and some parking lots of old airplane hangars in Alameda, only getting kicked out once or twice. Keeper got her lady bits removed and is recovering with her cone. She doesn’t like sitting still, girl is like a wild mustang. It was probably the nicest weekend SF has had in a while, so we spent it with friends in the city. Saturday night we visited some old stomping grounds in the mission and I felt old. All these 20 year old punks and their modelo beers at Elbow Room. We played pinball in the back until 1 am then went home. Hope you guys had a good weekend too.

A story, for Sunday

It was spring of 2013. The song was Jet – Are You Gonna Be My Girl. The guy’s name was Sam. He was my roommate on a night train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, Thailand. The intoxicating scent of alcohol and sweat filled the bar car as we all danced and sang together. The night was hot, the air thick with moisture. I grabbed my beer and sat down against the open windowsill of the train, taking in the moment. And that’s when it hit me. This was where I belonged.

A few hours earlier, I had been quietly reading in my bunk when Sam burst in the room swinging a bottle of whisky, demanding I come to the bar in the next car over. Sam was an energetic, worldly Londoner who smelled of brown liquor and carried a star-shaped tambourine with him wherever he went. When I first met him he was playing guitar and singing loudly with his feet dangling over the sides of his top bunk. “Can you sing like Morrissey?” he asked me, deadpanned. “No, sorry”, I responded while unloading my bags on the lower bunk diagonal to him. “Well, I’m Sam”. he replied matter-of-factly. “Nicole”, I said with a smile. I knew we would get along well from that point on.

As we entered the bar car, the train exhaled a large breath of hot, humid air that smelled of freshly rolled cigarettes and cheap booze. Everyone was dancing along to the loud 90s American pop music playing on large speakers that teetered in the corner with each sway of the train. I made eye contact with the neighborly people smiling at me and suddenly felt overly aware that I wasn’t wearing a bra with my tank top. I went for the door, motioning to Sam that I’d be right back, that I just needed to change my shirt. “NO!” he shouted, grabbing my hand and pulling me in close. A girl with broken english came over to me and put sunglasses on my face “PAR-TY GLASS-ES” she yelled over the music, smiling. She showed me to the booth she was sitting at with Sam and others. I ordered a beer and quickly discovered they only came in one size: 40 oz. As the night went on our tables became littered with the large bottles of Chang beer, and our singing grew louder. A girl from Sweden started dancing on the table, a guy from France drummed on his knees with chop sticks; a clove cigarette dangling delicately from his lips.

Hours past and the servers told us the music would be shut off soon. We all protested, not wanting the night to end. Sam left abruptly and returned minutes later with a speaker of his own. We all cheered in unison as the party went on. Sam sang loudly and I played the tambourine while others drummed the table. As I looked around at the people I had met that night, I was filled with immense happiness. Each of us came from different parts of the world, our final destinations unknown to each other. In the morning we would go our separate ways, but tonight we were neighbors, friends. We may not have spoke the same language, or understood each other’s culture, but together we spoke the universal language of dance, rhythm and freedom, and basked in the common culture of kindness and friendship. There in that car, on that train, there was no inadequacy, no judgment; only acceptance in the moment. I wasn’t Nicole, the girl who struggled with the concept of home and belonging somewhere. I was Nicole, the awesome tambourine playing, singing and dancing person without a care in the world.

And as I rested my head on the windowsill and looked out at the moon shining brightly against the darkened asian countryside, I couldn’t help but close my eyes and grin at the thrill the night had given me. At the unexpected, unknowingness, unawareness of it all. In that moment I knew both everything and nothing. And I was home.

This weekend breezed by. The weather was in the seventies and the sun felt so good. On Friday Trey and I met up after work and had some good mediterranean food at an outdoor table down the street. Then we caught up with some friends by walking to a house party later that night. Saturday we were lazy and spent most of the day recovering from the night before and watching basketball. On Sunday we spent some time with friends at the lake, then I worked on a fun little DIY project to post later this week. The weekend ended with some me time, complete with good smelling bath bombs and candles, a magazine and the latest episode of Girls. Then just a fast as the weekend got here, it was gone.

Hey Monday, hey.
