I’ve been into the ceramics trend lately and even started exploring studios in my area to learn more about using a kiln and the process behind making pottery. Then I came across this simple DIY with oven baked clay that doesn’t require a kiln or anything you can’t buy from the craft store. Bingo. Just an oven, some clay and get this…black pepper. Yep. It was really simple to make and a fun way to spend a Sunday morning. I love how they turned out and now it has me wanting to make other things using oven baked clay.
Here’s what you need:
Circle cookie cutter
Small glass bowl
Paint brush or small towel
Black pepper corns + grinder
Step 1: Prep and cut your clay. Preheat oven to 300˚F or recommended temperature from your clay packaging. Work clay in your hands until soft and roll into a small ball. Next, use a rolling pin to flatten the clay until it is about 1/8″ thick and use the cookie cutter to cut the clay into a circle shape. For a smaller dish, use a 2.5″ or smaller cookie cutter. For a larger dish, use a 3″ or larger.
Step 3: Place clay in bottom of glass bowl and bake. This will allow the clay to form a dish-like shape as it bakes. I used a ladle to make sure the clay was shaped properly. If you use your fingers, it will leave smudge marks. Bake for 10-15 minutes, then remove from oven.
Step 4: Let cool and add gloss. Let the clay cool for 10-15 minutes, then apply the glossy varnish with a paint brush or small towel. Let dry and repeat 2-3 times until desired gloss effect is achieved.
Step 5: Add some rings. Admire your work by adding your favorite jewelry to your new ring dishes! Don’t mind if I do.
